Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program

Deadline: 15 November 2006

The American Council of Learned Societies is launching a significant new fellowship program providing support for young scholars to complete their dissertation and, later, to advance their research after being awarded the Ph.D. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program will award fellowships in two categories: Dissertation Completion Fellowships and Fellowships for Recent Doctoral Recipients. A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports this program.

Dissertation Completion Fellowships
  • Stipend: $25,000, plus funds for research costs of up to $3,000 and for university fees of up to $5,000. * Tenure: one year beginning summer 2007.
  • Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, November 15, 2006.
  • Decisions will be announced in late March 2007.

The Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships are to assist graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing. This program aims to encourage timely completion of the Ph.D. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure or shortly thereafter.

ACLS will award 65 Fellowships in this competition for a one-year term beginning between June and September 2007 for the 2007-2008 academic year. The Fellowship tenure may be carried out in residence at the Fellow's home institution, abroad, or at another appropriate site for the research. The Fellowships include funds for university fees and research support (together with stipend the award may total up to $33,000) but may not be held concurrently with any other major fellowship or grant.

Eligibility
  • A Ph.D. candidate in a humanities or social science department in the United States. (Students preparing theses for master’s degrees are not eligible.)
  • All requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation completed before beginning fellowship tenure.
  • No more than six years in the degree program; awardees can hold this Fellowship no later than their seventh year.

The deadline for this is November 15, 2006

The first competition for Mellon/ACLS Fellowships for Recent Doctoral Recipients will take place in 2007-08. Eligibility for these 25 Fellowships will be limited to scholars who held Dissertation Completion Fellowships (or were ranked as Alternates in that fellowship competition) and who completed their dissertations within the period specified in their first fellowship application. Also eligible will be scholars who held other national dissertation fellowships—such as the Whiting Fellowships—and who completed their dissertations within the period specified in their first application. Only Ph.D. students holding such a dissertation completion fellowship during the 2007-08 academic year will eligible to apply. Those who will have already completed the doctorate prior to the 2007-08 academic year will not be eligible.

These Fellowships will carry stipends of $30,000 to allow the Fellow to devote an academic year to research. Awardees will have up to two years from the date of the award to take up Fellowship tenure. We expect that some awardees may use their Fellowship to take leave from a faculty position; those without a full-time position may choose to affiliate with a humanities research center or conduct research independently.

The first competition to be held in 2007-08

----SEDIKIT GAMBARAN TENTANG VLIR------------

VLIR finances 15 International Courses (ICPs) organised by the Flemish universities. These courses are master programmes, lasting one or two academic years, all of which lead to a master’s degree. They focus on specific problems of developing countries. The main target group for the courses are students from developing countries, although the courses can also be attended by Belgian students or students from other countries.

The ICPs aim to train people from the South with a responsible position in civil society (at a university, school, NGO, ministry, etc) in such a way that the knowledge that they acquire is disseminated and applied in the home institution and country of origin.

VLIR also finances International Training Programmes (ITPs) organised by Flemish universities and one university college. ITPs are short-term training programmes whose main focus is transferring skills rather than knowledge. The International Training Programmes are designed for people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience. Knowledge and skills are transferred through the ITPs, and the possibility for cooperation and networking is created.

VLIR is responsible for the offer of ICPs and ITPs. It provides funds to the organising Flemish universities and also provides a number of scholarships for each programme.

The Flemish universities themselves are responsible for the programmes’ academic content, and practical and logistical organisation.

Although they primarily address the needs of students and professionals from developing countries, these programmes are also open to other people. This brochure provides all the information you may need as a self-supporting student or as scholar.

Master's Programme in Security and Mobile Computing

Welcome to NordSecMob! http://www.tkk.fi/Units/CSE/NordSecMob/index.html

The Nordsecmob - Master's Programme in Security and Mobile Computing is a full-time Master of Science degree Programme with a duration of 2 years. During these two years, students will study at two of the five Nordic partner universities: Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) in Finland, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the University of Tartu (UT) in Estonia.

This programme is one of the 21 selected Masters Courses by the European Commission Erasmus Mundus programmes in 2005. The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying in third countries.

The NordSecMob - Master's programme in Security and Mobile Computing will operate for at least five years beginning in September 2006. The NordSecMob-consortium and the development of a joint study programme is also supported by Nordic Council of Ministers in the framework of joint study programmes.

why a joint study programme in data security and mobile computing Nordic countries have been very innovative in mobile communication.

The first regional cellural network started there giving the telecom industry a very good starting point to the second and third generation networks and devides. They were pioneers in large scale internet-usage in Europe. The biggest on-line banking system in the world has covered the area of scandinavia ten years. A broadband Internet-connection is assumed as a public service. The requirements for mobile computing and security has created an industrial and scientific cluster in Nordic countries.

The participating universities are leading part of this cluster in their own countries in the scientific side. The field of data security is too large area to be covered totally in one university.

The Objectives
The objective of the programme is to enable students to acquire profound and wide knowledge in the field of computer science, data security and mobile computing, both in practice and in theory. The programme aims at developing the research skills of students to further studies at the PhD-level, gaining international research experience in R&D environments and give an access to major international networks.
